You may have been right about your borderline diagnosis because I have found that the most popular signs and symptoms of narcissism that we encounter are normally the tip of the iceberg in terms of the severity of the disorder they are suffering from.
I tend to think of the narcissism as a warning sign to something greater that poses even more risk to the person who is dealing with the disorder and loved ones in their lives.
It is present in those with bipolar, borderline, and antisocial personality disorder; all illnesses where danger of harm to themselves and others is extremely high.
These illnesses often go undiagnosed because the symptoms of high narcissistic traits are ignored, but they are usually an early sign of one of the above illnesses which are far more serious and will have significant negative impact on the persons life and those around them if left undiagnosed and untreated.
It is then made all the more disturbing that such individuals are the least likely to seek help for their disorders even when problems are pointed out by concerned loved ones.
