They can’t deal with the reality that people are a delicate blend of both good and bad, so they create this perfectly imagined snapshot in their minds.
This perfect maternal, internalized image of you in the narcissist’s mind is still there even though the narcissist has devalued and discarded you in the chaotic real world.
This happens because narcissists can separate from their flesh and blood partner in real life, but they can never separate from the internalized image of you in their mind because it is part of the shared fantasy and they are emotionally attached to that.
As a consequence, the narcissist is still enmeshed with you, and in their mind, you were both always there together, you never left.
